Electives and Support Staff
The elective teachers at MCCS provide a variety of learning experiences for our students. They enhance the abilities that students possess and unlock skills that students were unaware of. Mrs. Maloney is passionate about all forms of art and this passion is infectious with our students. Mrs. Eller provides technology support to our staff, teaches computer skills, and collaborates with middle school teachers through interdisciplinary assignments. Mrs. Williamson is passionate about developing healthy habits, having fun while exercising, and reinforcing positive behaviors through sport. Mrs. Poppi helps students develop confidence, work together, and find their voice through choir. Mrs. Kristie and Mrs. Michelle provide educational support to students and collaborate with teachers to ensure that students reach their potential.
Erica Maloney | Art & Yearbook Teacher
Hello. My name is Erica Maloney. This is my 18th year teaching art and my first year as an MCCS Lion. I worked for 17 years in the public school system before coming to MCCS. I am married to my wonderful husband, Jason, who is a speech pathologist, and we have an amazing five-year-old daughter. I am originally from Pennsylvania but have been living in NC since starting my teaching career in 2004. I received my bachelor's degree in art education and a minor in jewelry and metal smithing from Edinboro University of PA and my master's degree in art education from the University of NC Pembroke. I love to make art in all forms and mediums, but I especially love drawing, painting, and making jewelry. I am so excited to be a part of the MCCS Lion's family and look forward to an fantastic year teaching art and spreading the word of God!
Rene Eller | Computer Technology Education Teacher
I have been married for 31 years with two beautiful children. We have seen many miracles throughout our lives. I am active in church and the ministries we support. I love working at MCCS and allowing Jesus to work through me in ministering to future generations.
Poppi Welborn | PK, Elementary and High School Music Teacher
I have been teaching at MCCS for 8 years, and in K4 for 7 years. I am also blessed to teach High School Choir, K4 & K5 Choir, 1st - 2nd Grade Choir, and 3rd - 5th Grade Choir. I love my jobs and this school! If I could describe myself in one word it would be PINK: it's my favorite color and makes me truly happy! I have been married to my Prince Charming, Ray, for 18 years, and we have two sons, Bryson and Brenyn, who both attend MCCS. I am blessed to have a fantastic family support system consisting of my mama, mother-in-law, sister, two brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, three nephews, four nieces, a god-sister and her family to which I am an honorary aunt. I thank God for my time here, and look forward to seeing how He will continue to use and bless MCCS students, staff, and alumni.
Melissa Williamson | PE & Health Teacher
I teach PE for K5-9th grade. A native of Greensboro, NC, I've lived in Wilkes County since 2008 and am a graduate of Appalachian State University with a BS in Health Promotion-Nutrition. My family has been associated with MCCS since moving to the area. I'm married and have two boys who attend MCCS. I enjoy reading, swimming, cooking, walking, and snow skiing. My favorite season is Winter. I love creating active kids, and teaching students how to stay healthy with regular physical activity, and good nutrition. A student’s overall health and well-being, and helping each person reach their God-given potential, is my number one goal as a teacher.
Kristie Cothren | Educational Therapy Teacher
I am a Speech-Language Pathologist and have 19 years of experience. I absolutely love working at MCCS! I love the freedom that we have here to worship throughout the day and to be able to provide what our children need without strings attached or red tape. I have two children who attend MCCS. Jadyn is in the 10th grade and Thomas is in the 5th grade. Both of them have been here since they were 4 years of age. My free time is mainly spent with a precious group of girls playing volleyball and basketball for MCCS! Go Lions!
